Indigenous peoples, based on the knowledge of their ecosystems they have accumulated through generations, all over the world have been able to take effective action to adapt and mitigate to the effects of climate change every day. The knowledge and practices developed by these peoples constitute an important asset to reinforce assessments and response to climate change.
Collaboration between Parties and indigenous peoples in the context of formal and informal education systems offer possibilities to sum up efforts to jointly tackled climate change. Developing and supporting curricula and materials generated by indigenous peoples related to climate change that highlight indigenous knowledge increases the potential to empower our societies to develop more resilient interactions with the environment and face the challenges brought up by climate change.
In the framework of activity 3 of its second three-year work plan, the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) will facilitate an annual round-table dialogue, with the participation of the Facilitative Working Group (FWG), indigenous peoples, indigenous educators, Parties, ministers of education, academic institutions and other potential partners to discuss curricula development and other educational materials.
Objectives
This round-table dialogue will:
- Promote greater understanding of indigenous knowledge and its importance in relation to assessing and responding to climate change;
- Highlight good practices in formal and informal education systems that foster the inclusion of indigenous knowledge;
- Show how the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in education systems can impact climate action;
- Develop synergies between the LCIPP and relevant stakeholders (knowledge function).
