The Conference of the Parties at its twenty fourth session (COP 24) requested the secretariat to organize a thematic workshop, in conjunction with the fiftieth session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), on enhancing the participation of local communities, in addition to indigenous peoples, in the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) (decision 2/CP.24 paragraph 22).

This will be the third workshop under the LCIPP. The first took place in May 2017 on the operationalization of the LCIPP. The second session took place in May 2018 on implementing the functions of the LCIPP. The Platform’s three functions are knowledge, capacity for engagement, and climate change policies and actions.

On the same topic of enhancing participation of local communities, the COP also invited Parties to promote the engagement of local communities in the LCIPP with a view to enhancing their participation in the Facilitative Working Group (FWG) and the Platform. In 2021, the SBSTA will undertake a review of the outcomes and activities of the LCIPP, and in this context, will take into account progress related to the representation of local communities, the addition of at least three additional representatives to represent local communities, as well as a process for the appointment of such representatives, and an equal number of Party representatives. The SBSTA should forward a draft decision to COP 27 on the representation of local communities
