Indigenous peoples and local communities have the knowledge and values amassed through generations of close contact with nature. Collaboration with indigenous peoples and local communities will help point the way towards climate policies that help reorient the way societies interact with nature and stabilize the global climate system.

The Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) is an open and inclusive space for the exchange of experiences about mitigation and adaptation. The Facilitative Working Group is the UNFCCC constituted body that carries out the work under the platform, and its indigenous and party members work side by side to address and respond to climate change in a holistic and integrated manner.

When you get to understand how climate policy under the UNFCCC process works, it will be easier for you to get involved and help elevate indigenous expertise to help achieve the objectives in the Paris Agreement.

This informal briefing will provide an overview of:

1. The UNFCCC process, and how the upcoming COP26 fits in;

2. The Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform, and how its work, carried out by the Facilitative Working Group, helps bring indigenous perspectives to climate policy;

3. Activities of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform at COP26 in Glasgow;

4. Work ahead in 2022-2024.
