Background

As set out in the Baku Workplan of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP), Collective Approach 1 seeks to shift global climate change discussions under the UNFCCC process to incorporate the values, worldviews, intergenerational wisdom and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and knowledge of local communities, thus fostering a profound connection with nature. It also aims to enhance global climate action by elevating the recommendations, practical examples and insights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, emphasizing their climate leadership and nature stewardship.

As part of the activities under Collective Approach 1, an Informal Contributors Briefing has been scheduled to build the capacity of Indigenous Peoples and local community representatives to engage in the sessions of the COP.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness and understanding among Indigenous Peoples and local communities about the UNFCCC process, in particular the 31st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 31)
  • Facilitate informed participation in the 16th meeting of the Facilitative Working Group (FWG 16) and mandated LCIPP events at COP 31

Approach

  • The virtual Informal Contributors Briefing will run for two and a half hours and use interactive and participatory methods to engage Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The briefing will include presentations, interactive activities, and open dialogues.
  • As part of the briefing, a dedicated session will be held for funded Knowledge Holders on how to engage in the COP process and the second Global Stocktake (GST 2), in line with decisions 19/CMA.1, 1/CMA.5 and 14/CP.29. Other interested participants are also welcome to join.
