Indigenous peoples and local communities have knowledge and values on the stewardship of the natural world amassed through generations of close contact with nature. Parties can reorient the way societies interact with nature, elevate climate action, and stabilize the global climate system through engaging with the expertise of indigenous peoples, local communities, and their knowledge systems. The Facilitative Working Group (FWG) of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) is mandated to host a meeting in conjunction with the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) with the participation of indigenous peoples on traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples, and local knowledge systems on cross-cutting issues related to addressing and responding to climate change. Through engaging directly with expert knowledge holders during this meeting, Parties can unlock sustainable and resilient ways to meet the Paris Agreement commitments and reverse biodiversity decline.

This meeting falls under the LCIPP function of "knowledge". Under this function, the platform promotes the exchange of experience and good practices with a view to applying, strengthening, protecting, and preserving traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples, and local knowledge systems. This includes technologies, practices and efforts of local communities and indigenous peoples related to addressing and responding to climate change, taking into account the free, prior and informed consent of the holders of such knowledge, innovations, and practices. This meeting further enhances the operationalization of the LCIPP established through decision 1/CP.21 which "recognizing the need to strengthen knowledge, technologies, practices and efforts of local communities and indigenous peoples related to addressing and responding to climate change, and establishes a platform for the exchange of experiences and sharing of best practices on mitigation and adaptation in a holistic and integrated manner."
